Every aluminum fence sold by Fencing and Railing Solutions includes powder coating. What is this coating and how is it applied?

What Is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a type of finish that is applied to aluminum fences. It is made from a combination of pigments, curatives, resin, leveling agents, and various additives. Prior to application, this mixture is stored as a powder.

How Is Powder Coating Applied To Fence Sections?

Here’s a breakdown of the powder coating application process.

First, the aluminum fence section is prepared through a chemical and/or physical cleaning process. This ensures that a smooth application will occur.

Once the surface has been cleaned and smoothed, an electrostatic gun is used to impart an electric charge to the powder. This charge causes the powder particles to be attracted to a “grounded” material – in this case, the aluminum fence section. As a result, when the powder leaves the electrostatic gun, it sticks to, and coats, the fence.

The coated section is then cured. This is done by placing the fence section into a curing oven that is heated to temperatures between 325℉ to 450℉. These high temperatures cause the powder to melt and form a cohesive barrier.

Once the section has cooled it can then be packaged.

Powder Coating vs Paint On Fences

Once applied, powder coating never needs to be reapplied. It protects the fence from the elements and UV additives help to prevent the fence color from fading. Powder-coating typically lasts at least 15-20 years.

Paint often has irregularities after application. It doesn’t last for more than a few years and requires regular touch-ups. There will always be an ongoing expense associated with the cost of maintaining a fence that has been painted.
